Webinar: How national ecosystem assessments can support implementation of the Convention on Biological Diversity

  • News

On the 23rd of November, the Sub-Global Assessment Network in collaboration with the NEA Initiative at UNEP-WCMC is hosting an open webinar to officially launch the guidance ‘National Ecosystem Assessments to support implementation of the Convention on Biological Diversity’. This guidance was developed in collaboration with the Secretariat of the Convention on Biological Diversity (CBD) and with the generous support of the Japan Biodiversity Fund. It presents the various ways in which national ecosystem assessments can support national implementation of the Convention.

In 2018, the Conference of the Parties to the CBD encouraged parties and governments to undertake national assessments of biodiversity, ecosystem functions, and ecosystem services (Decision 14/1). National ecosystem assessments can play an important role in supporting CBD implementation by providing a critical synthesis of policy-relevant knowledge on biodiversity and ecosystem services and enhancing national capacities at the science-policy interface.

The information in the document was compiled from the generous inputs of the Bangkok and Kunming workshop participants. The guidance aims to support National Focal Points of the Convention on Biological Diversity (CBD) to better understand how national ecosystem assessments can help countries overcome challenges in CBD implementation around: biodiversity planning; national reporting; technical and scientific cooperation; capacity development; communication, education, and public awareness; and resource mobilisation.

The event is intended for CBD and IPBES National Focal Points, individuals working to meet their country’s commitments under the CBD, and anyone interested in learning more about the role of national ecosystem assessments in supporting implementation of the Convention.

The webinar will present key messages highlighted in the guidance and examples of impact of national ecosystem assessments towards national implementation of the CBD. There will also be a Q&A session for participants to share their thoughts and questions.

The NEA Initiative is delighted to be hosting speakers from the Secretariat of the Convention on Biological Diversity, UNEP-WCMC, and country partners from the NEA Initiative at this event. If you would like to register for this webinar, please click on the button below:
