UNESCO has been leading UN efforts in engagement with indigenous peoples with decades of experience in strengthening indigenous peoples and local communities and fostering their transdisciplinary capacity and engagement with scientists and policymakers across different thematic fields. UNESCO’s Executive Board in 2017 noted with satisfaction UNESCO’s Policy on Engaging with Indigenous Peoples .
UNESCO’s Local and Indigenous Knowledge Systems (LINKS) Section serves as the indigenous and local knowledge technical support unit for IPBES and BES-Net. Within the BES-Net initiative, UNESCO LINKS supports the national ecosystem assessment (NEA) teams in mobilising and synthesising indigenous and local knowledge to provide the best available knowledge for an NEA. The NEA is expected to help establish evidence-based and locally appropriate policies and conservation actions that recognise and strengthen livelihoods, knowledge and cultures of indigenous peoples and local communities.
